EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative sketch of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII, was created by the renowned artist John St. Helier Lander in 1922. The Prince, who would go on to become the King of the United Kingdom in 1936, is depicted in the sketch in a relaxed and informal pose, reflecting the period following his return from a successful royal tour. The sketch was originally made as a study for a full-length portrait of the Prince, which was later published in the Illustrated London News in a special supplement that coincided with the Prince's return. The supplement was an important event for the newspaper, as it marked the first time that a full-length portrait of a member of the Royal Family had been published in the Illustrated London News. After the publication, the painting was kindly donated to Manchester City Art Gallery by the proprietors of The Illustrated London News. The sketch provides a unique and intimate glimpse into the life of the future King during a significant moment in his career, and is a testament to the artistic skill of John St. Helier Lander."
