Dinner in the Iguanodon model, Crystal Palace, Sydenham

Diners seated in a model of an Iguanodon at Crystal Palace, London. The Iguanodon was a creation of Mr. B. Waterhouse Hawkins who was constructing models of various dinosaurs in his studio at Crystal Palace. The attendees were scientific friends and supporters of the project who were invited to join Hawkins on New Years Eve, 1853. The ILN keenly describes the invitations;...such cards!...written on the wing of a Pterodactyle, spread before a most graphic etching of the Iguanodon.... The eminent Victorian zoologist and palaeontologist, and founder of the Natural History Museum, Richard Owen (1804-1892) can be seen sitting in the head of the model. Date: 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a unique and intriguing dining experience that took place in the Iguanodon model at Crystal Palace, Sydenham, London, in 1854. The Iguanadon, a creation of the renowned British sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, was one of several prehistoric animal models he was constructing in his studio at the Crystal Palace. To celebrate the completion of this impressive work, Hawkins invited a select group of scientific friends and supporters to join him for a New Year's Eve dinner in the head of the Iguanodon model. The invitations to this exclusive event were nothing short of extraordinary. They were crafted in the form of cards, with the design featuring a wing of a Pterodactyl spread before a graphic etching of the Iguanodon. Among the distinguished guests was the eminent Victorian zoologist and palaeontologist, Sir Richard Owen, who can be seen seated in the head of the model in this photograph. Richard Owen, the founder of the Natural History Museum, was a leading figure in the scientific community and an influential supporter of Hawkins' work. The gathering at the Iguanodon model marked a significant moment in the history of palaeontology, bringing together some of the most brilliant minds of the era to celebrate the wonders of the prehistoric world.
