EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts Antipope Alexander V, a figure of intrigue and controversy in the tumultuous history of the Catholic Church. Born as Baldassare Cossa, he rose to power in the late 15th century during the Great Schism, a period of profound division and discord within the Church. In 1409, Cossa was elected as a rival pope to Pope John XXIII, who was backed by the French, while Alexander was supported by the Germans. Alexander V's election took place in Pisa, Italy, and his papacy was marked by political maneuvering, bribery, and the sale of indulgences. The legitimacy of his claim to the papacy was widely questioned, and his reign was short-lived, lasting only a little over a year. Despite his questionable background, Alexander V is depicted here in grandeur, wearing the papal tiara and holding the papal staff, or ferula. The richly decorated robes, adorned with gold and jewels, symbolize the power and wealth that came with the papacy. The backdrop of the image, with its intricate architectural details and ornate furnishings, further emphasizes the opulence of the papal court. However, the image also carries an air of unease and uncertainty. The shadowy figure behind Alexander V, peering over his shoulder, represents the constant threat of challenge and opposition that hung over his reign. The ominous clouds in the background, and the fact that Alexander V is shown holding a sword, underscore the violent and tumultuous nature of the times. In the end, Alexander V's papacy was a brief and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to resolve the Great Schism. He was eventually deposed, and the Church was not reunited under one pope until the election of Martin V in 1417. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the complex and often contentious politics of the time, and the enduring allure and power of the papacy, even in the face of controversy and doubt.
