1. Title: "New Lady Godiva: A Naughty Tale of Coventry's Iconic Clock Tower" In the heart of Coventry, West Midlands, England, stands an intriguing and captivating clock tower that has long been a source of fascination and amusement for locals and visitors alike. Known as the New Lady Godiva Clock, this iconic landmark, located in Broadgate, tells an engaging and slightly naughty tale that dates back to the late 1940s. The New Lady Godiva Clock is a reinterpretation of the legendary Lady Godiva story, which originated in Coventry during the 13th century. According to the myth, Lady Godiva, a noblewoman and the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, rode through the town naked on a white horse as a protest against her husband's oppressive taxes. Upon hearing of his wife's plan, Leofric reportedly made a pact with the townsfolk that they would not look upon her as she rode past, and true to their word, they all closed their shutters and turned their backs. Fast forward to the late 1940s, when Coventry architect Donald Gibson, inspired by the city's rich history, designed the New Lady Godiva Clock. The clock's design features Lady Godiva riding a white horse, but with a playful twist – every hour, on the hour, a small figure of a peeping tom emerges from behind one of the clock faces, attempting to catch a glimpse of Lady Godiva. This mischievous addition adds an element of fun and interaction to the clock, inviting passersby to engage with the story and imagine the tales of old. The New Lady Godiva Clock, with its intricate design and captivating story, serves as a reminder of Coventry's rich history and the playful spirit of its people. This photograph, taken circa 1950, captures the essence of this iconic landmark and the charm of a bygone era.
