EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1944, we find ourselves transported back in time to the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome, Italy. The NaFI, or Navy, Army and Air Force Institute, had taken over a grand department store, reminiscent in size to London's iconic Selfridges. Named after the esteemed Allied commander, Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, this club was a sanctuary for soldiers and troops during World War II. The image captures the fourth floor of this impressive edifice, home to the bustling Gift Shop. The soldiers, a testament to the ongoing conflict, browse through the various items on display with keen interest. The shop, filled with an array of goods, offers a brief respite from the hardships of war. The central open space, bathed in natural light, features a serene pool with goldfish and a fountain. This tranquil oasis, nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of the shop, adds an element of calm and relaxation. The soldiers, momentarily distracted from the rigors of war, engage in light-hearted banter as they contemplate their purchases. The NaFI Alexander Club in Rome served as a vital hub for the Allied forces. It provided essential services, including a post office, barber shop, library, and cinema, to name a few. The Gift Shop, with its diverse offerings, was a popular destination for the soldiers, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the club and the morale-boosting efforts of the NaFI during World War II.
