EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at the historic port of Mazagan, now known as El Jadida, in Morocco. The image depicts a grand procession of women from the harem of a Moorish minister embarking on a journey along the quayside. Dressed in vibrant, intricately patterned robes and veils, the women are accompanied by their entourage, including servants and eunuchs, as they make their way towards the Portuguese fortification. Mazagan, located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, was a significant fortified colony established by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The fortification, with its impressive bastions, ramparts, and walls, is an early example of Renaissance military design. The city, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, was taken over by the Moroccans in 1769 and remains a fascinating blend of Portuguese and Moroccan architectural influences. The women in the photograph, with their elegant attire and regal bearing, offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Moorish court. The quayside, with its bustling activity and the Portuguese fortification looming in the background, underscores the rich cultural history of this North African coastal town.
