EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Craigweil House, Bognor Regis: A Royal Retreat Where George V Found Solace During His Illness (Craigweil House, Bognor Regis, West Sussex - where George V convalesced between February 9th 1929 and May 15th 1929) This evocative photograph captures the elegance and tranquility of Craigweil House, a coastal retreat in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, where His Majesty King George V spent his convalescence between February 9th, 1929, and May 15th, 1929. The King, who had been suffering from a lung ailment, sought respite from the rigors of royal duties and the London climate in the seaside town. The Craigweil House, a grand and imposing structure, stands proudly against the backdrop of the English Channel. The white stucco exterior, adorned with intricate detailing, exudes an air of opulence and sophistication. The house, which was originally built as a private hotel, was transformed into a royal retreat for the monarch and his entourage during his stay. The serene surroundings of Craigweil House, with its expansive gardens and proximity to the sea, provided the perfect setting for the King to rest and recuperate. The peaceful atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, allowed him to focus on his health and rejuvenate his energies. Unfortunately, the history of Craigweil House was not without its share of tragedy. A fire, which broke out in the house in 1938, led to its unfortunate demise. Despite this, the memory of the King's convalescence at Craigweil House remains an indelible part of Bognor Regis' rich history and the legacy of its most famous royal guest. This photograph, taken in 1935, captures the essence of Craigweil House in its prime, standing proudly as a symbol of regal retreat and tranquility by the sea.
