EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Woodland Kingfisher, Halcyon senegalensis, also known as the Rufous-vented Kingfisher or Halcyon rufiventer. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, Birds of Western Africa, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1837. The illustration was produced by the skilled hands of engraver William Lizars, working from the original watercolors of naturalist and artist William Swainson. The Woodland Kingfisher is a small, colorful bird native to the forests of western and central Africa. With its vibrant plumage, this bird is a striking sight among the lush greenery of its woodland habitat. The male, as depicted in this engraving, is characterized by its blue-grey upperparts, rufous underparts, and distinctive white underwings. The female, not shown here, has a similar appearance but with a brown back and wings. Kingfishers are known for their distinctive hunting technique. They perch on a branch or other vantage point and then dive into the water to catch their prey. The Woodland Kingfisher feeds mainly on insects, fish, and crustaceans. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time. It provides a glimpse into the natural history of the Woodland Kingfisher and the rich biodiversity of western Africa during the 19th century.
