EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts women's costumes of the mid-15th century, as illustrated and lithographed by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck in his seminal work, "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," published in Frankfurt in 1889. The image is derived from the Duke of Saxony's friendship book in the Dresden State Archive. The women in this illustration are dressed in the fashionable attire of the mid-15th century, a time when European fashion was heavily influenced by the courts of Spain, particularly that of King Henry IV of Castile, who died in 1474. The women wear voluminous, flowing gowns, often adorned with heraldic coats of arms, featuring lions and other symbols of power and nobility. One woman wears a black cape, which was a common outer garment for women during this period, often worn for mourning or as a sign of status. She also wears a tall, conical hat, which was a popular headpiece of the time. Another woman is depicted wearing a leather bodice, which was a practical undergarment that provided support and shape to the gown. Her boots are also made of leather, and feature high heels and pointed toes, which were fashionable during this period. The women's gowns are often adorned with intricate appliques and embroidery, adding to their elegance and opulence. The use of heraldic coats of arms, featuring lions and other symbols, was a way for women to display their family's status and wealth. Overall, this illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the mid-15th century, a time of great artistic and cultural innovation in Europe.
