EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts Wintergreen or Pipsissewa, Chimaphila umbellata (subsp. cisatlantica, also known as Chimaphila corymbosa), a small, evergreen plant native to the eastern United States and Canada. The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and later lithographed by Hanhart for inclusion in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants," published in London in 1880. Wintergreen, also known as checkerberry or teaberry, is a low-growing plant that forms mats or creeping mats in wooded areas. It is easily identified by its bright green, rounded leaves, which release a distinctively sweet, minty aroma when crushed. The plant's small, white to pinkish flowers bloom in dense, umbellate clusters in late spring. Wintergreen has a long history of medicinal use by various indigenous peoples in North America. The plant was used to treat a range of ailments, including respiratory problems, digestive issues, and pain relief. The essential oil extracted from the plant's leaves was used topically to treat skin irritations and internally as a flavoring and medicinal agent. The botanical illustration and lithograph provide a detailed and accurate record of the plant's appearance, making it an invaluable resource for botanists, herbalists, and medical professionals of the time. The intricate details captured in the illustration and the vibrant colors used in the lithograph showcase the beauty and intricacy of the natural world and the skill of the botanical illustrator and lithographer.
