EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts a Weddell Seal, Leptonychotes weddellii, also known as the Sea Leopard or Antarctic Seal. The image is taken from a specimen housed in the Edinburgh Royal Museum and is based on an illustration by James Stewart, with engraving by W.H. Lizars, as part of Robert Hamilton's seminal work, "Amphibious Carnivora," published in Edinburgh in 1839 as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Mammalia. The Weddell Seal is the largest of the Antarctic seals, with males reaching up to 3.2 meters in length and weighing up to 1,500 kilograms. They are well adapted to the harsh Antarctic environment, with a thick layer of blubber and fur for insulation, and a streamlined body shape for efficient swimming. They are named after Sir James Weddell, a British explorer who discovered the Weddell Sea in the late 1820s. The Weddell Seal is an important part of the Antarctic food chain, feeding primarily on fish and squid. They are also an essential food source for larger predators such as killer whales and leopard seals. They are known to breed on the pack ice, where they form large colonies, and give birth to their young in ice crevices. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the Weddell Seal but also highlights the remarkable achievements of the naturalists and illustrators of the 19th century in documenting the natural world. It is a testament to the enduring fascination with the Antarctic and its unique wildlife.
