EDITORS COMMENTS
Waterloo Place, a grand and stately scene in Regency-era London, as depicted in this beautiful handcoloured copperplate engraving from Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts, published in 1812. The view looks toward Carlton Palace, a castellated mansion located on the north side of Pall Mall. The second Earl of Mornington, Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess of Wellesley, and Duke of Wellington, is known to have resided in this impressive octagonal building, which boasts towers and turrets reminiscent of a gothic fortress. The central focus of the image is a hackney cab, adding a touch of everyday life to the otherwise aristocratic and grand setting. Waterloo Place, named in honor of the Battle of Waterloo, was designed by John Nash and completed in 1815. The French Gardens, located to the left of the image, were a popular attraction for Londoners and visitors alike. The intricate details of the engraving, from the ornate architecture of the buildings to the individual leaves on the trees, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the time. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the scene, making it a captivating representation of Regency London and the aristocracy and landed gentry who called it home.
