EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the uniform of a State Messenger (Messager d'État) during the Directory period in France. The Directory was the governing body of France following the fall of the First French Republic and preceding the Consulate. Each councilor was assisted by four messengers, responsible for delivering important documents and communications throughout the administration. The messenger is dressed in a pristine white tunic, which is tucked into high-waisted blue breeches. Over the tunic, he wears a blue coat with red lapels, signifying his official status. The coat is adorned with gold buttons and a silver badge displaying the French tricolor cockade on the left chest. The messenger completes his outfit with a tall, tricorn hat, which features a white plume and a tricolor cockade on the left side. The plumes are made of ostrich feathers, adding an elegant touch to the uniform. This image is taken from Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France, published in Paris in 1852. The publication was part of a series dedicated to documenting historical costumes from various periods in French history. The meticulous attention to detail in this lithograph is evident in the intricate design of the uniform, the realistic rendering of the fabric textures, and the vibrant colors of the tricolor plumes and cockades.
