EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Tropical Chestnut or Nawa Tree, Sterculia balanghas. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Tropical Chestnut Tree, also known as Nawa, Coarse Stinkweed, Opercularia Aspera, or Ligustrifolia Operculaire, is native to tropical Africa and Southeast Asia. The tree is characterized by its large, operculated fruits, which are enclosed in an operculum or lid. The tree's leaves are simple, oblong, and have a rough texture. The Tropical Chestnut Tree is an important source of food and medicine in many parts of the world. The fruits are edible and can be eaten fresh or cooked. The tree's bark and leaves have been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including fever, dysentery, and skin conditions. This beautiful illustration showcases the intricate details of the Tropical Chestnut Tree's leaves, fruits, and bark. The use of handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true masterpiece of botanical art. The stipple engraving technique, which involves the use of small dots to create texture and shading, further enhances the illustration's detail and realism. Overall, this illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the botanical illustrators of the past.
