EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured stipple engraving depicts the Tree of Heaven, scientifically known as Ailanthus altissima, also referred to as Ailanthus glandulosa or Chouchun in Chinese. The image is based on an illustration by the renowned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute, as featured in Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's comprehensive work, "Traité des Arbres et Arbustes," published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. The Tree of Heaven, native to China, is a fast-growing deciduous tree that has naturalized in many parts of the world, including Europe and North America. Its distinctive features include its large, compound leaves, which resemble those of the maple tree, and its distinctive, fragrant flowers, which bloom in late summer. The Tree of Heaven has held traditional significance in Chinese medicine for centuries. The bark, leaves, and roots of the tree have been used to treat a variety of ailments, including fever, diarrhea, and skin conditions. The tree's sap has also been used as a source of latex, which has industrial applications. The intricate details of the Tree of Heaven in this engraving are a testament to the skill of the engraver, Moret, who brought Redoute's illustration to life through the meticulous process of stipple engraving. The resulting image is a beautiful and accurate representation of this versatile and historically significant tree.
