Tower Bridge - the High Road and the Low Road
The High Road and the Low Road: a striking view of the Tower Bridge and its useless superway. The high level footway of Tower Bridge, London, was constructed with the object of enabling foot passengers to continue across the bridge when the drawbridge was raised, but experience showed no time was saved by using it. People who waited for the drawbridge to close got there just as soon and with less trouble, and so it was closed to the public after quite a short run.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1913, showcases the iconic Tower Bridge in London with its High Road and Low Road. The High Road, a raised footway built above the bridge's traffic lanes, was intended to allow pedestrians to continue crossing the bridge uninterrupted when the drawbridge was raised. However, the reality proved to be quite different. Despite the noble intentions, the High Road was ultimately deemed unnecessary. In practice, those who waited for the drawbridge to close and then crossed at the Low Road reached their destination just as swiftly, if not faster, than those who used the High Road. Furthermore, the process of navigating the High Road was more complicated and time-consuming. Consequently, the High Road was closed to the public after a brief period of use. The Tower Bridge, an engineering marvel of its time, remains a symbol of London's rich history and transport legacy. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the bridge's unique design and the quirks of early 20th-century transportation. The contrast between the bustling traffic below and the deserted High Road adds an intriguing layer to this image.
