EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured stipple engraving, titled "Tigres et Carabes" from Charles Malos' Les Insectes, published by Louis Janet in Paris in 1820, showcases an intriguing array of beetles. The first three beetles depicted are Tiger beetles, specifically Cicindela sinuata (1), Cicindela campestris (2), and Cicindela sexguttata (3). Tiger beetles are large, predatory ground beetles, known for their distinctive stripes and hooked jaws. The fourth beetle is the Nitidula sanguinolenta, also known as the Red Raspberry Beetle or the Spotted Raspberry Beetle. This small, oval-shaped beetle is characterized by its bright red body and black spots. The fifth beetle, Telephore flavipede, is a species of scarab beetle, easily identified by its yellow legs and antennae. The sixth beetle is the Anthrenus verbasci, also known as the Honeylocust Borer or the Blue-legged Carpet Beetle. This beetle is a common pest of honeylocust trees and is easily recognized by its blue-black body and long, slender legs. The engraving also features various other beetles, including African Rhinoceros Beetles (Diceros bicornis and Sumatran Rhinoceros Beetles, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), which are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. The extinct Sumatran Elephant Beetle (Megasoma elephas) is also depicted. This beautiful and educational illustration was produced using the copperplate engraving technique, a popular method for creating detailed and intricate images during the 19th century. The illustration was likely intended for use in a children's picture book or educational encyclopedia, as was common during this time. The publisher of this work was Friedrich Johann Bertuch, a renowned German publisher known for his high-quality educational materials. This engraving, along with others from the Les Insectes series, would have provided children with a fascinating introduction to the natural world and its diverse inhabitants.
