Thatched House Tavern

The Thatched House Tavern appears to have been established in 1704 or 1705, probably in St James Street. This building was demolished in 1814. In December 1711 Swift refers to it in The Journal to Stella: I entertained our Society at the Thatched House Tavern to-day at dinner; but brother Bathurst sent for wine, the house affording none. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting image transports us back in time to the 18th century, featuring the quaintly named Thatched House Tavern. Established around 1704 or 1705, this historic tavern was once located in the heart of St James Street. The building, with its distinctive thatched roof, was a popular gathering place for London's elite and literary society. In December 1711, renowned satirist Jonathan Swift made a mention of the tavern in his journal to Stella. He wrote, "I entertained our Society at the Thatched House Tavern to-day at dinner; but brother Bathurst sent for wine, the house affording none." This anecdote not only highlights the social significance of the tavern but also its lack of provisions, indicating that it may have been more famous for its hospitality than its offerings. Unfortunately, this charming piece of history was lost to time. The Thatched House Tavern was demolished in 1814, leaving behind only memories and stories like Swift's. Today, we can only imagine the lively conversations and debates that once filled this tavern, as we admire its image in this beautiful 1875 print.
