EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Tawny Prominent, Harpyia milhauseri, and Seven-Spot Ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, with Fruit Flies on a Hazel Tree, Corylus avellana," is a remarkable observation of the intricate relationships between various insects and their surroundings. Drawn and etched by the skilled hand of Jacob L. Admiral, this engraving is a part of the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The image captures the Tawny Prominent moth, Harpyia milhauseri, in various stages of its life cycle - the caterpillar, larva, pupa, and the adult moth. The Draak, or Seven-Spot Ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, is also depicted, along with fruit flies, all interacting on the branches of a hazel tree, Corylus avellana. The intricate details of the insects' anatomy and the textures of the tree bark and fruit are beautifully rendered, showcasing the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the creation of this engraving. M. Houttuyn, who oversaw the production of the second edition, added eight new plates to the original 25, expanding the scope of the work and further showcasing the natural wonders of the insect world. This engraving is a testament to the fascination with the natural world that existed during the 18th century and the meticulous methods used to document and illustrate it.
