Artus Gewachse Hand Atlas Handbook Herbal Indica Medical Pharmaceutical Mediinisch Pharmaceutischer Sammtlicher Seed Tamarind Tamarindus Willibald

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tamarind, Tamarindus indica, is a tropical leguminous tree, native to Africa, and now widely cultivated in tropical regions for its unique and delicious fruit. This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Dr. Willibald Artus' Hand-Atlas sammtlicher mediinisch-pharmaceutischer Gewachse (Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants), published in Jena, Germany, in 1876, provides an intricate and detailed illustration of the various parts of the Tamarind tree and its fruit. The large, pod-like fruit of the Tamarind tree is shown in the foreground, with its brown, wrinkled exterior giving way to a red, juicy pulp filled with small, brown seeds. The seeds are encased in a sweet, sticky substance, which is often used as a condiment or flavoring agent in various cuisines around the world. The tree itself is depicted in the background, with its long, drooping branches laden with pods. The Tamarind tree has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, with the fruit and its seeds being particularly valued for their therapeutic properties. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, calcium, and potassium, and is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The seeds are used to treat digestive issues, including dyspepsia and diarrhea, and have been shown to have antidiabetic effects. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration not only showcases the unique beauty of the Tamarind tree and its fruit, but also highlights the importance of natural medicinal plants in traditional and modern medicine. The meticulous craftsmanship of the copperplate engraving technique adds an additional layer of artistry to this botanical masterpiece.
