Sweetwood Bark, also known as Croton eluteria or Bahama Cascarilla, is a small tree native to the West Indies and Central and South America. This handcoloured lithograph, created by Hanhart after a botanical illustration by David Blair, is taken from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The tree produces a reddish-brown bark that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. The bark is rich in tannins and is known for its astringent, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It was traditionally used in herbal medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including dysentery, diarrhea, and fevers.
