EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Striped Threadfin and Bluefish," is an exquisite example of the naturalistic illustrations found in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The engraving features two distinct marine species: the Striped Threadfin, Polydactylus plebeius, and the Bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix. The Striped Threadfin, also known as the Chinese Threadfin or Fistularia tabacaria, is a slender, elongated fish with distinctive vertical stripes. It is a member of the Fistulariidae family, commonly found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Bluefish, or Pomatomus saltatrix, is a powerful, migratory fish with a distinctive electric blue coloration on its back and silver sides. It is a popular game fish and is also known as the Common Bluefish or the European Mackerel. The Bluefish is a member of the Scombridae family and is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator, was considered one of the greatest of the 19th century. His meticulous attention to detail and naturalistic style are evident in this beautiful illustration. The intricate stipple engraving technique used to create the image adds depth and texture, bringing the fish to life on the page. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the 19th century.
