EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of a bustling 1820s town, William Liston, a brave veteran of the Dutch army, sells his handmade toy lambs from a woven basket. Having served under the Duke of York and losing his right arm and left leg during the Battle of Castricum on the 6th of October 1799, William's military career came to an end. With a wife and four young children to support, he turned to street trading as a means of earning a living. Using his creativity and resourcefulness, William crafted his toy lambs from wooden figures, dressing them with white cotton wool for fleeces, red paint for rosy cheeks, and black spots for eyes. The horns were fashioned from twisted shipping tin. The lambs, with their lifelike features, brought joy and wonder to the children who passed by. William's cries of "Young Lambs for Sale!" echoed through the streets as he traveled from one town to another. His determination and spirit were undeterred by his physical limitations. The money earned from his toy sales provided for his family, allowing them to live comfortably during the 19th century. This poignant image captures the resilience and ingenuity of William Liston, a disabled war veteran who turned adversity into opportunity. The 1825 photograph, taken during the Victorian era, is a testament to the human spirit and the power of creativity to uplift and inspire.
