Gerbe for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases the intricate process of nest building in two different species of sticklebacks: the common or European stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and the ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius. The male and female common sticklebacks are depicted in the foreground, working together to construct their nest. The male, with his vibrant red coloration and distinctive spines, carefully selects pebbles and plants to create a secure and stable structure. The female, with her more subdued coloration, lays and incubates the eggs within the nest. In the background, a ninespine stickleback is shown enlarging the opening of its nest.
