EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, entitled "Species of Ostracods," showcases ten different species of this intriguing crustacean group. Ostracods, also known as seed shrimp or mussel shrimp, are small, round, bivalve crustaceans with a distinctive, circular, old man's face. They are commonly found in marine and freshwater environments, and their shells have been used as fossils to study paleoenvironmental conditions. The engraving features six distinct species, each labeled with its scientific name. Among them are Cypris fusca (1), Cypris ornata (2, 3), Cypris vidua (4), Cypris unifasciata (5, 6), Cypris monacha (7), Cythere lutea (8), Cipride bruna (not visible), Cipride ornata, Cipride vedova, Cipride unifascata, Cipride religiosa, and Citerea gialla. The illustration was created in 1837 by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest illustrators of the 19th century, and his work is known for its exceptional detail and accuracy. The engraving was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Turpin, while Batelli e Figli published the work in Florence, Italy. This image offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of ostracods and showcases the exquisite artistry of Turpin and his collaborators. The intricate stipple engraving technique, which involves the use of tiny dots to create shading and texture, adds to the overall beauty and depth of the illustration.
