EDITORS COMMENTS
Smooth Layia, Layia chrysanthemoides, also known as Chrysanthemum-like Oxyura or Oxyura chrysanthemoides, is a beautiful and intricately detailed flowering plant depicted in this hand-colored copperplate engraving. The engraving is based on a botanical illustration by the talented Mrs. Augusta Withers, which was published in Benjamin Maund and the Reverend John Stevens Henslow's renowned botanical publication, "The Botanist," in London during 1836. Mrs. Withers' illustration captures the delicate elegance of Smooth Layia with stunning accuracy. The plant is shown in full bloom, its white petals unfurled around a central yellow disc, resembling a miniature chrysanthemum. The veining on the leaves and the intricate details of the flower's reproductive structures are also expertly rendered. The copperplate engraving process used to create this print involved the transfer of the illustration onto a copper plate, which was then etched with acid to create the lines and details. The plate was then hand-colored using watercolors to add depth and vibrancy to the image. The result is a stunning, lifelike representation of Smooth Layia that transports us back to the Victorian era and the world of beautiful botanical discoveries. Smooth Layia is a native of South America and is still prized for its attractive flowers today. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and importance of botanical illustration in the 19th century, and a reminder of the enduring allure of the natural world.
