EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate print depicts the Smelt, Osmerus eperlanus (also known as Salmo eperlanus), a small, slender fish native to both the marine and freshwater environments of the North Atlantic. The illustration is taken from Edward Donovan's seminal work, "The Natural History of British Fishes," published by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. Donovan, an accomplished Irish naturalist and artist, meticulously drew and engraved each plate himself, resulting in a stunningly accurate and visually appealing record of the diverse fish species found in British waters. The Smelt is a highly migratory fish, spending most of its life in the ocean but returning to freshwater to spawn. This print captures the fish in its mature form, with a silvery body adorned with small, dark spots and a distinctively long, pointed snout. The Smelt was of great interest to both scientific and fishing communities during the time of Donovan's publication, as its migratory habits and unique life cycle made it a subject of fascination for ichthyologists and zoologists. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this copperplate print serve not only as a testament to Donovan's artistic skill but also as an invaluable historical record of the natural world. Today, the Smelt remains an important species in both scientific research and commercial fisheries, making this illustration a valuable resource for those studying the biology and ecology of this fascinating fish.
