Sir Henry Thompson (1820-1904), a renowned surgeon of the late 19th century, is depicted in this striking portrait painted by Sir John Everett Millais in 1881. Thompson's distinguished career in medicine began in 1845 when he became a house surgeon at University College Hospital in London. He went on to make significant contributions to the field of surgery, particularly in the areas of abdominal and thoracic surgery. Thompson's eminence in the medical community was recognized by his appointment as a surgeon to Queen Victoria in 1853, a position he held for over 30 years. In 1862, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1878, he was knighted for his services to medicine. This portrait, painted when Thompson was in his late sixties, captures the wisdom and authority of a man at the pinnacle of his career. Thompson sits confidently on a throne-like chair, dressed in the formal attire of a Victorian gentleman. His piercing gaze and steady hand resting on his thigh convey a sense of determination and expertise.
