EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a male and female Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) in their winter plumage, with one of their prey items, a Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus). The intricately detailed illustration is a faithful representation of an original ornithological drawing by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon, created for Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The male Sharp-shinned Hawk, perched on a tree branch, displays his distinctive black-banded tail and rufous-colored wings, while his piercing yellow eyes survey the landscape below. His sharp, hooked beak and powerful talons are well-equipped for hunting and capturing prey. The female, sitting on a nearby branch, is slightly smaller and has a more muted coloration, with brown and gray feathers blending in with her surroundings. Her eyes are also yellow, but her beak is paler in color. Their prey, a Horned Grebe, lies limp in the female's talons. This waterbird, with its distinctive horns and black and white plumage, was a common sight in the wetlands and waterways of Pennsylvania during the late 19th century. The Sharp-shinned Hawk is a versatile and agile hunter, able to catch a wide range of prey, from small birds and mammals to amphibians and reptiles. This beautiful and informative illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of John James Audubon and the dedication of Benjamin Harry Warren to documenting the natural history of Pennsylvania. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that allowed for vibrant colors and intricate detail, further enhances the visual impact of this image.
