EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate print depicts the Sea Lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, a parasitic fish species native to the North Atlantic Ocean and large rivers draining into it. The Sea Lamprey, also known as the Marine or Spotted Lamprey, is a unique fish with a distinct elongated, eel-like body and a series of circular, toothless suctorial discs on the front of its head. These discs are used to attach the lamprey to the gills or body of another fish, where it feeds by sucking the host's blood and other fluids. The Sea Lamprey was meticulously drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his groundbreaking work, "The Natural History of British Fishes," published between 1802 and 1808 by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London. Donovan's illustrations were considered the most accurate and detailed of their time, and this print is a testament to his skill and dedication to the field of ichthyology (the study of fish) and zoology (the study of animals). The Sea Lamprey is an important species in the marine ecosystem, serving as both a predator and a food source for larger fish and marine mammals. However, its parasitic behavior can have negative impacts on fish populations, particularly in freshwater environments where it can disrupt the balance of ecosystems. Despite these challenges, the Sea Lamprey remains an intriguing and fascinating species, and its study continues to contribute to our understanding of the complex relationships within the marine world.
