EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali (Dictionary of Natural Science) in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two unique and intriguing crab species: the Scorpion Spider Crab (Inachus dorsettensis, also known as Inaco scorpione or Inaco dorinco) and the Leach's Spider Crab (Inachus phalangium, also known as Inaco phalangium, Portunus marmoreus, Pubes, Devil Fighter, Lady Crab, Jean Gabriel Pretre's Velvet Swimmer, Necora Marbled, Liocarcinus portuno, Stregghia, or Marezzato). The Scorpion Spider Crab, depicted on the left, is characterized by its elongated legs and pincers resembling the legs and pincers of a scorpion. Its body is covered in small, hair-like setae, giving it a velvety appearance. This crab is typically found in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, living in rocky areas and caves at depths of up to 1,000 meters. The Leach's Spider Crab, shown on the right, is easily recognizable by its long, spindly legs and large, spider-like claws. Its body is covered in small, white spots and it has a translucent, almost transparent appearance. This crab is native to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, and it is known to live at depths of up to 3,000 meters. The illustration was engraved by Chiassone, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill are evident in this exquisite representation of these fascinating crab species.
