EDITORS COMMENTS
This image presents a striking contrast between two distinct moments in the history of The Savoy Hospital in London. On the left, we find a beautifully detailed print of the hospital as it appeared in 1650, as depicted in Wenceslaus Hollar's engraving. The Savoy Hospital, founded by Peter, Count of Savoy, in the 13th century, was originally located on the site of the Savoy Palace. In the foreground, we see the grand Cleveland House, which later served as the residence of Barbara Palmer, the 1st Duchess of Cleveland and the mistress of King Charles II. On the right, the scene shifts dramatically to the ruins of The Savoy Hospital in 1792, as captured in a copperplate engraving by John Thomas Smith. The passage of time had taken its toll, leaving the once magnificent structure in a state of decay. The hospital, which had been in decline for centuries, was eventually demolished in the late 18th century. The print on the right is a testament to the transient nature of human creations and the inexorable march of time. It serves as a reminder of the rich history that lies beneath the modern cityscape of London. The Savoy Hospital, with its connections to the Savoy Palace, the Duke of Bridgwater, and the intriguing figure of Barbara Palmer, continues to captivate historians, architects, and enthusiasts of London's past.
