EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Salsify, Houseleek, Snakeroot, Cornflower, Judas Tree, African Iris, Sedum, Sesamoides, Scorzonera, Serpentaria, Siligua (Seu Arbor Judae), Sisyrinchium," is a breathtaking illustration of various plants from Professor Filippo Arenas's comprehensive work, "La natura e cultura dei fiori fisicamente esposta" (The nature and culture of flowers physically displayed), published in Palermo, Italy, in 1771. The illustration showcases an array of intriguing botanical specimens, each meticulously rendered in rich detail. At the center of the composition, we find the Salsify (Scorzonera hispanica, 1) and its close relative, the Scorzonera (1a), both characterized by their long, tuberous roots and tall, slender stems. Nearby, the Mountain Houseleek (Sempervivum montanum, 2) and its diminutive relative, the African Iris species (6-8), are depicted, the former known for its succulent rosettes and the latter for its vibrant, iridescent flowers. The Snakeroot (Sagittaria sagittifolia, 3) is illustrated in the lower left corner, its arrow-shaped leaves and white flowers contrasting beautifully with the other plants. The Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus, 4) is shown in full bloom, its distinctive blue flowers and prickly leaves adding a touch of elegance to the composition. The Judas Tree (Cercis siliquastrum, 5) is depicted in the upper right corner, its pink, pea-like flowers and heart-shaped leaves adding a pop of color to the illustration. The Sedum (Sedum), Sesamoides, and Siligua (Seu Arbor Judae, 9) are also represented, their succulent leaves and various forms contributing to the overall diversity of the composition. This stunning engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic prowess of the time but also offers a glimpse into the rich botanical knowledge that was being documented and shared during the 18th century. It is a beautiful reminder of the enduring connection between humans and the natural world.
