EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handfinished chromolithograph showcases a stunning collection of Sage, or Salvia, species, including Brilliant-flowered Sage (Salvia fulgens), Spreading Sage (Salvia patens), Mr. Graham's Sage (Salvia grahami), Narrow-leaved Sage (Salvia angustifolia), and possibly others. The illustration is based on an original drawing by Jane Loudon for her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. Chromolithography, a popular printing technique of the 19th century, allowed for vibrant, detailed color reproductions. In this image, each sage plant is depicted in full bloom, their rich hues and intricate foliage showcased against a lush, green background. The delicate petals of the brilliant-flowered sage unfurl in shades of red, pink, and purple, while the spreading sage boasts lavender-blue blooms. Mr. Graham's sage and narrow-leaved sage display their distinct white and blue flowers, respectively. These beautiful sage species not only add visual interest to any garden but also provide a variety of flavors and aromas for culinary and medicinal uses. This print serves as a testament to the timeless allure of these beloved plants.
