EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases two captivating moths: the Ruby Tiger Moth (Phragmatobia fuliginosa) and the Peach Blossom Moth (Thyatira batis). The Ruby Tiger Moth, depicted in the first five plates, is a large and striking moth with a wingspan of up to 10 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with vibrant red and black markings, resembling the tiger stripes for which it is named. The Ruby Tiger Moth is native to the Old World, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Southern Europe. The Peach Blossom Moth, illustrated in the last three plates, is a smaller moth with a wingspan of around 5 centimeters. Its wings feature intricate patterns of brown and white, reminiscent of peach blossoms. The Peach Blossom Moth is found in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The engraving provides a detailed and accurate representation of these moths, showcasing their intricate wing patterns and delicate features. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image. This engraving is an excellent example of the meticulous work that went into early entomological illustrations. It also provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating insects, which undergo complete metamorphosis from caterpillar to pupa to adult moth. The Ruby Tiger Moth and Peach Blossom Moth are just two of the many species of Noctuidae, or owlet moths, which make up the largest family of moths and butterflies. This engraving is a testament to the importance of natural history illustrations in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
