EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Royal Fern, Osmunda regalis, also known as Osmonde royale, a magnificent fern species native to wetlands and forests in North America, Europe, and Asia. The intricately detailed illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and beautifully rendered in steel engraving by Debray, as part of the comprehensive botanical work "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale" published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs between 1864 and 1871. The Royal Fern is characterized by its large, elegant fronds, which can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. The fronds are compound, with each frond made up of numerous pinnae, or leaflets, arranged in a regular, alternating pattern. The midrib of each pinna is covered in small, brown scales, while the underside of the pinnae is adorned with sori, the spore-producing structures of the fern. The meticulous attention to detail in this botanical illustration allows us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the Royal Fern, as well as the skill and artistry of the illustrator and engraver. This exquisite piece is a testament to the rich botanical knowledge of the 19th century and the importance of documenting the natural world for scientific and artistic purposes.
