Royal Coburg Theatre
The theatre was founded in 1818 by James King and Daniel Dunn (formerly managers of the Surrey Theatre in Bermondsey), and John Thomas Serres, then the marine painter to the King. Serres managed to secure the formal patronage of Princess Charlotte and her husband Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, and named the theatre the Royal Coburg Theatre. In 1929 the theatre was renamed The Old Vic. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph, taken in 1875, captures the grandeur of the Royal Coburg Theatre in its prime. The theatre, founded in 1818, was the brainchild of James King and Daniel Dunn, former managers of the Surrey Theatre in Bermondsey, and John Thomas Serres, the esteemed marine painter to the King. Serres' ability to secure the formal patronage of Princess Charlotte and her husband, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, was instrumental in the theatre's prestigious name. The royal couple's association with the theatre lent it an air of sophistication and exclusivity. The theatre, located in the heart of London, was a popular destination for the city's elite, offering a diverse range of productions, from dramas and comedies to operas and concerts. The ornate architecture and opulent interior design are evident in this photograph, with its intricate details and grandiose columns. In 1929, the theatre was renamed The Old Vic, but this image serves as a reminder of its illustrious past as the Royal Coburg Theatre.
