EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792. Bertuch, a German publisher and man of arts, is renowned for his 12-volume encyclopedia for children, which featured over 1,200 engraved plates on various subjects including natural history, science, costume, and mythology. The image showcases an intriguing assembly of exotic animals from different parts of the world. In the foreground, a majestic Indian rhinoceros, Rhinoceros unicornis, stands proudly with its distinctive horn and massive body. Two plains zebras, Equus quagga, can be seen in the background, their distinctive black and white stripes creating a striking contrast against the lush greenery. A male and female Indian porcupine, Hystrix indica, are depicted in the lower left corner of the image. The Indian porcupine is known for its quills, which it uses as a defense mechanism. In the lower right corner, a Sulawesi babirusa, Babyrousa celebensis, is shown. This unique-looking pig has a distinctive pair of tusks that curl backward, resembling a pair of horns. This engraving not only serves as an educational tool but also as a beautiful work of art, showcasing the intricate details of each animal and the skillful use of hand-coloring to bring them to life. The image provides a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century, offering a fascinating insight into the curiosity and wonder that children, and adults, held towards the natural world.
