EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative oval portrait captures the distinguished countenance of Reverend Richard Polwhele (1760-1838), a Cornish clergyman, poet, and historian whose works remain an invaluable source of information on the history and folklore of Cornwall and Devon in the early 19th century. Polwhele was born in Launceston, Cornwall, and educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He was ordained as a deacon in 1785 and a priest in 1786, serving various parishes in Devon and Cornwall throughout his career. Polwhele's literary pursuits began in earnest in the late 18th century, and he published his first major work, "History of Devonshire," in 1812. This comprehensive history covered the county's history from prehistoric times to the present day, and was praised for its meticulous research and engaging style. Polwhele's other notable works include "History of Cornwall," "The History of Launceston and its Vicinity," and numerous poems and essays. As a historian, Polwhele was particularly interested in the mythology, folklore, and antiquities of his native region. He was a member of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature, and Art, and was a frequent contributor to the "Cornwall and Devon Quarterly Magazine." Polwhele's extensive knowledge of local history and folklore made him a popular figure in his community, and he was often consulted by antiquarians and scholars from across the country. Despite his many accomplishments, Polwhele remained humbly devoted to his role as a clergyman, and continued to serve his parishioners with dedication and compassion until his death in 1838. This portrait, with its solemn expression and dignified demeanor, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the service of his community.
