EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "One Way to Stop Your Horse," depicts a Regency-era scene of a horse rider in a state of imminent collision with a stagecoach. The rider, wearing a top hat and holding a cudgel, sits atop a dray horse that appears to have been startled or spooked, its ears pinned back and eyes wide with fear. The stagecoach driver and a publican, both in period attire, watch in horror from the side of the road as they roll barrels of beer in a desperate attempt to clear a path. The intricate detail of the image is a testament to the skill of Thomas Rowlandson, who created this engraving based on an original illustration by Henry Bunbury for Geoffrey Gambado's "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," published in London in 1809. The design also features a curious onlooker, a Turkish man in exotic garb, and a Frenchman with a monocle, adding to the lively and eclectic mix of characters. The rider's attempt to prevent the collision is evident in the use of a chin piece, a puzzle or muzzle strap around the horse's mouth, and a bored dog lying at the horse's feet. However, the chaotic scene suggests that these measures may not be enough to prevent the inevitable crash. The intriguing title of the engraving, "One Way to Stop Your Horse," adds an element of mystery and puzzle to the image, leaving the viewer to ponder the outcome of this Regency-era mishap.
