This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts a Red-necked Wallaby, Macropus rufogriseus (previously known as Halmaturus rutilans), a native marsupial of Australia. The image is derived from a detailed illustration created by the renowned Scottish naturalist and artist, Charles Hamilton Smith, for William Jardine's Naturalist's Library published in Edinburgh in 1843. The engraving was executed by the esteemed Scottish printing firm, Lizars. The Red-necked Wallaby is a medium-sized wallaby species, with distinctive reddish-brown fur on its neck and shoulders, which contrasts with its light grey or brown body.
