EDITORS COMMENTS
Red Elderberry, or Sambucus racemosa, is a beautiful and intricately detailed plant depicted in this handcoloured stipple engraving by Mlle. Brenet, after an original illustration by the renowned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute. The engraving is taken from Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's comprehensive work, "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes," published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. The Red Elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree, native to Europe, North America, and Asia. It is characterized by its clusters of small, bright red berries, which ripen in late summer and are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The plant's leaves are compound, with serrated edges, and its flowers are white or cream-colored, arranged in flat-topped clusters. The Red Elderberry has long been valued for its medicinal properties, particularly for its ability to boost the immune system and alleviate cold and flu symptoms. The berries have also been used to make jams, jellies, and wines. In traditional folklore, the plant was believed to have protective powers and was used to ward off evil spirits. This stunning engraving captures the beauty and intricacy of the Red Elderberry in exquisite detail, showcasing the skill and artistry of both Mlle. Brenet and Pierre-Joseph Redoute. The use of handcolouring adds an additional layer of depth and richness to the image, making it a true masterpiece of botanical illustration.
