EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration showcases the impressive reconstruction of a Diplodocus, an extinct dinosaur species of the Diplodocidae family, during the Lower Cretaceous period in North America. Measuring an astonishing 22 meters in length, the Diplodocus is depicted in a serene swamp lake setting, providing a glimpse into the prehistoric world. The Diplodocus, meaning "three-fold beam" in Greek, is known for its long neck and tail, small head, and distinctive hump on its back. This marine creature, also referred to as Brachiosaurus velox when found with a shorter neck, is believed to have lived in the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods, around 154 to 153 million years ago. The illustration, created by renowned German paleontologist and illustrator Hugo Wolff-Maage, was published in Wilhelm Bolsches Das Leben der Urwelt, or Prehistoric Life, in 1932 by Georg Dollheimer in Leipzig, Germany. The detailed and accurate representation of the Diplodocus in this illustration is a testament to Wolff-Maage's expertise in zoology and paleontology. The discovery of Diplodocus fossils in North America and East Africa has provided valuable insights into the anatomy and behavior of these magnificent creatures. Though they are now extinct, their presence continues to fascinate scientists and the public alike, offering a window into the diverse and fascinating world of prehistoric life.
