EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases a collection of intricately detailed marine species, including the Queen triggerfish (Balistes vetula), Wedge-tail triggerfish (Rhinecanthus rectangulus), Short-nosed tripodfish (Triacanthus biaculeatus), and two varieties of triggerfish, the Baliste and Vieille, with distinctive double dorsal fins and long, sharp spines. The illustration is based on an original work by Jean-Gabriel Pretre and expertly rendered by Massard for the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans by Bernard Germain de Lacepede, published in Paris in 1825. The Queen triggerfish, also known as the Queen angelfish, is a vibrant, colorful fish with a compressed body and distinctive black and white markings. The Wedge-tail triggerfish, on the other hand, sports a more elongated body and a distinctive wedge-shaped tail, earning it its name. The Short-nosed tripodfish, as its name suggests, has three protruding pectoral fins that resemble a tripod, allowing it to stand still on the ocean floor. The Baliste and Vieille triggerfish, both members of the Balistidae family, are characterized by their double dorsal fins and long, sharp spines, which they use for defense. This engraving not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these fascinating marine creatures but also highlights the exquisite artistry of the time.
