The image is based on a contemporary woodcut from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," published in Paris in 1852 by the Administration de Librairie. The Provost, an important figure in the commercial and judicial life of medieval Paris, is shown wearing the distinctive robes and headdress of his office.
