EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Provost of Merchants of Paris, Prevot des Marchands, during the reign of King Francis I. The image is based on a contemporary woodcut from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," published in Paris in 1852 by the Administration de Librairie. The Provost, an important figure in the commercial and judicial life of medieval Paris, is shown wearing the distinctive robes and headdress of his office. He is depicted with a stern expression and a long, flowing beard, conveying the gravity and authority of his position. The richly textured fabric of his robe, adorned with intricate patterns and gold trim, reflects the wealth and prosperity of the merchants he represented. The Provost's staff, topped with a silver ball, is held in his right hand, symbolizing his power to enforce the laws and regulations governing the merchants and craftsmen of Paris. The elegant yet detailed rendering of this historical figure, captured through the skillful artistry of Leopold Massard, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and social hierarchy of the French Renaissance.
