EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Princess Parrotfish, Scarus taeniopterus, also known as the Spotfin Parrotfish or Broadbarred Parrotfish. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest illustrators of the 19th century. The Princess Parrotfish is a vibrant and striking marine fish, characterized by its colorful scales and distinctive markings. With a body length of up to 40 centimeters, this fish is a popular sight in tropical reefs around the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The illustration accurately captures the fish's elongated body, large pectoral fins, and the distinctive black and white bars on its body. The Princess Parrotfish is a herbivorous fish, feeding on algae and other vegetation. It is also known for its ability to change its gender, with males turning into females when the population becomes dominant with females. The illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this beautiful and intriguing marine species. Turpin's skillful use of stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the illustration, making it a true masterpiece of 19th-century natural science illustration.
