EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 1806 portrait captures Princess Elizabeth of the United Kingdom (1770-1840), the seventh child and third daughter of King George III, in a moment of quiet reflection. The princess, dressed in the height of Georgian fashion, dons a turban adorned with intricate lace and a high-waisted gown. Her regal bearing is further accentuated by the elegant collar and the delicate brushes resting on a palette at her side. Princess Elizabeth was born on December 15, 1770, at St. James's Palace in London. Her father, King George III, was known for his mental instability, which led to the Regency of his son, the Prince of Wales, during Elizabeth's formative years. Despite this, Elizabeth received an excellent education and was known for her intelligence, kindness, and strong moral character. The portrait, taken during her late twenties, showcases the princess's striking features and refined elegance. The artist, unknown to us, skillfully captured the essence of the princess's regal presence, making this a truly captivating image of a British royal from the 1800s. The oval format of the portrait adds to the intimacy and intimacy of the scene, allowing the viewer to connect with the princess on a personal level. Princess Elizabeth went on to marry Prince Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1815, becoming the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She was a beloved member of the royal family and is fondly remembered for her dedication to her husband and her charitable works. This portrait is a testament to the beauty, grace, and strength of this remarkable woman, who lived during a pivotal time in British history.
