EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Prince Grand-Dignitaire de l'Empire, a high-ranking noble title in the Napoleonic era. The Prince is shown wearing the grand uniform of the Legion d'Honneur, an order of merit and military decoration established by Napoleon Bonaparte in May 1802. The Legion d'Honneur was the first merit order created in the modern world, and its members were awarded for their military or civil merits. The Prince's uniform is adorned with gold braid and intricate embroidery, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the Napoleonic court. The most prominent feature of the uniform is the sash of the Legion d'Honneur, which is draped over the left shoulder and fastened at the waist with a large golden eagle. The Prince also wears a sword with a hilt of gilt bronze, symbolizing his military rank. The Prince Grand-Dignitaire de l'Empire was an important administrative position in the Napoleonic regime, responsible for advising the emperor on matters of state. The title was created in 1804, and the holder of the title was granted the rank of a marshal of the palace and the title of count. This beautiful lithograph is from the collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix. The collection was published in Paris in 1852 and is considered a seminal work in the study of historical costumes. The lithograph was produced by Leopold Massard, a skilled artist who expertly captured the intricate details of the Prince's uniform and the elegance of the Napoleonic era.
