EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Vitellius (Aulus Vitellius Germanicus Augustus), who ruled the Roman Empire from 69 AD until his assassination later that same year. Vitellius, born in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, rose through the ranks of the Roman military to become a successful general under the reign of Emperor Nero. Following Nero's death, Vitellius seized power in a civil war against other claimants to the throne, including Otho and Vitellius' own son, Lucius. The image of Vitellius, as captured in this 17th-century copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' De Roomsche Monarchy, portrays the emperor with a regal and confident demeanor. He is depicted wearing the imperial purple robe and the diadem, symbols of his power and authority. The engraving also includes the titles "Holy Roman Emperor," "King of Austria," "King of Bohemia," "King of Hungary," and "King of Croatia," reflecting Vitellius' claims to various territories and titles during his brief reign. Vitellius' rule was marked by extravagance and debauchery, earning him the disdain of many in Rome. Despite his popularity among the soldiers who had brought him to power, Vitellius was ultimately assassinated during a military coup led by his rival, Vespasian. This portrait, created in the 1690s, serves as a visual reminder of the complex and often tumultuous political landscape of ancient Rome, as well as the enduring allure of its imperial past.
