EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Titus, also known as Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, who ruled the Roman Empire from AD 79 to 81. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "The Roman Monarchy" by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht in 1697, with the engraving by Abraham Bogaerts. Titus, born in AD 39, was the eldest son of Vespasian, who became emperor in AD 69. The portrait presents Titus in a formal and regal manner, wearing the traditional toga and draped cloak, adorned with the imperial purple. The allegorical figure of Genius, the protective spirit or guardian angel, is depicted on the right side of the portrait, symbolizing the divine guidance and protection bestowed upon Titus as emperor. The coat of arms of the cities of Friesland and Groningen can be seen in the background, adding an intriguing connection to the Netherlands. The allegorical figure of the Genius of Groninga, the protective spirit of Groningen, is also present, further emphasizing the symbolic significance of the image. The intricate details of the engraving, such as the delicate folds of the toga and the intricate patterns on the coat of arms, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the 17th-century engraver. This portrait not only serves as a testament to the artistic skills of the time but also offers a glimpse into the rich history and symbolism of the Roman Empire and its connection to European heraldry.
